In an interview with Australian Health Journal, paediatric ophthalmologist Dr Loren Rose discussed the launch of her new Paediatric Eye Care training program, an educational initiative designed to improve the knowledge and confidence of healthcare professionals caring for children with eye conditions.
Drawing on almost two decades of experience in paediatric ophthalmology, alongside her research into childhood myopia, Dr Rose explained that the program reflects both her clinical expertise and her long-standing passion for education. She said the rapid advances in myopia management have created a need for practical, accessible learning resources that busy clinicians can easily incorporate into practice.
The online program consists of ten concise modules covering the fundamentals of paediatric eye care, including assessment, amblyopia, strabismus, myopia management, syndromic myopia, treatment guidelines, and emerging therapies. While primarily developed for optometrists, ophthalmologists and orthoptists, Dr Rose believes the content will also benefit paediatricians and other professionals working with children.
Recognising that healthcare professionals are increasingly time-poor, Dr Rose said, “These training modules are designed to be simple bite-size information that can be captured and evolved into your practice.” She hopes the flexible learning format will make contemporary paediatric eye care more accessible across a broader clinical audience.
Reflecting on the motivation behind the project, Dr Rose emphasised that it was driven by a desire to improve patient outcomes through education. “These modules really come about from a little bit of a passion project to really get all that knowledge… into more bite-size pieces where it can hopefully help somebody else and be adopted in a positive way to improve the outcomes of everybody’s patients,” she said.
